JC-PIC — SOFTWARE LICENSE AGREEMENT (Free-of-charge end-user license, warranty disclaimer and limitation of liability) Version 1.0 — September 2026 JC-PIC ("the Software") is a Particle-In-Cell / Monte Carlo Collisions simulation program for low-temperature plasmas, published by Jean-Pierre Boeuf, independent research scientist and plasma physics consultant, Toulouse, France https://jc-pic.org — contact: see the website referred to below as "the Licensor". By installing or using the Software you ("the Licensee") accept the terms of this Agreement. If you do not accept them, do not install or use the Software. 1. Copyright The Software — its executable programs, its user interface, its cross-section data files as assembled, its manual and its documentation — is protected by copyright and by international treaties. © 2026 Jean-Pierre Boeuf. All rights not expressly granted below are reserved by the Licensor. 2. License granted The Licensor grants the Licensee, free of charge and for the duration of the copyright, a non-exclusive, non-transferable right to install and use the Software, on any number of computers under the Licensee's control, for any purpose — research, teaching, engineering or commercial. The activation key delivered on first launch is personal to the Licensee and may not be passed on. 3. Restrictions The Licensee shall not: (a) redistribute, sell, rent, lend or make the Software or the cross-section data files available to third parties, in whole or in part, other than by pointing them to https://jc-pic.org for the Software, and to www.lxcat.net for the cross-section data files; (b) modify, translate, decompile, disassemble or reverse-engineer the Software, or attempt to extract its source code, except to the extent that applicable law expressly permits it; (c) remove or alter any copyright, license or version notice; (d) use the Software to build a competing product from its internal files; (e) incorporate, embed, bundle or link the Software or any of its components into another program, product or service, call it from another program offered to third parties, or offer its functions as a hosted or online service ("SaaS") — any such integration, OEM distribution or service offering requires a separate written agreement with the Licensor; (f) use the name "JC-PIC" or its logo to designate or promote another product or service. Scripts and tools written by the Licensee for its own use of the Software (reading its output files, driving runs) are not an integration within the meaning of (e). 4. Test-case library, documentation and cross-section data The electron-neutral scattering cross sections included with JC-PIC are from the open access website, LXCat (www.lxcat.net). In particular, the electron-helium cross sections are from the Biagi-v7.1 database on LXCat while the other electron scattering cross sections are from the SIGLO database. The ion-neutral scattering cross sections are from the Phelps database. Many other databases as well as references can be found on LXCat. These data are the work of their respective contributors and are redistributed here in accordance with the LXCat terms of use; any publication based on them should acknowledge LXCat and the database used. The test-case library bundled with the Software (the case descriptions, figures and animations, also published as the book "Physics of Low Temperature Plasmas via Particle Simulation", doi:10.5281/zenodo.22258142) is licensed separately under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International license (CC BY 4.0). The input files of the cases may be freely copied and modified. The User Manual may be copied for the Licensee's own use. 5. Citation Results obtained with the Software and used in a publication, a report or a thesis should cite the Software by name and version together with its companion book: J.-P. This is a request, not a condition of the license. Reference should also be made to the specific cross-section data used as input in the calculation. No warranty The Software is provided "as is", free of charge, and the Licensor gives no warranty of any kind, express or implied, other than that of good faith. In particular the Licensor does not warrant that the Software is free of defects, that it will run without interruption or error, that it will be compatible with the Licensee's hardware and software, or that it will meet the Licensee's needs. The Licensee acknowledges that the Software is a research tool implementing numerical models whose validity depends on the conditions simulated and on the input data, and that the scientific state of the art does not allow every use of the Software to be tested. 7. Limitation of liability To the fullest extent permitted by applicable law, the Licensor shall not be liable for any direct, indirect, incidental, special or consequential damage arising from the use of, or the inability to use, the Software — including, without limitation, loss of data, loss of time, loss of profits, business or contracts, damage to equipment, or any decision, design, publication or safety assessment based on results produced by the Software. The Licensee alone is responsible for checking the results of the Software before relying on them. Nothing in this Agreement excludes a liability that cannot be excluded under applicable law. 8. Personal data On first launch the Software asks for a name and an e-mail address in order to send an activation key, and stores that address together with a machine identifier in the Licensee's Windows profile (%APPDATA%\JC-PIC). These data are used only to deliver the key and to verify the activation; they are not transmitted to third parties and the Software makes no other network connection, except the optional download of the pre-computed results of the test-case library that the Licensee requests explicitly. The Licensee may request the deletion of this data by writing to the contact address on the website. 9. Term This license takes effect on installation and lasts for the duration of the copyright. It terminates automatically if the Licensee breaches Article 3; the Licensee must then uninstall the Software. Articles 6 and 7 survive termination. 10. Governing law This Agreement is governed by French law. Any dispute that cannot be settled amicably shall be brought before the competent courts of Toulouse, France. If a provision of this Agreement is held invalid, the remaining provisions remain in force. The English text of this Agreement is the reference text.
